Integrated Farming Systems Research Station (IFSRS), Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram
The IFSRS is situated at Nedumcaud, Karamana 3.0 km south east of Thiruvananthapuram Central railway and bus stations. The station has an area of 7.65 ha of which 7.25 ha is double cropped wet land and 0.4 ha garden land. The centre, formerly known as the Model Agronomic Research Station, was established in 1955. New schemes and projects were started from 1968 onwards under the All India Co-ordinated Agro-nomic Research Project (AICARP) of the ICAR. From October, 1983 onwards, the station was upgraded as the HQ of the AICARP in Kerala.
The mandate of the station is development and validation of region specific integrated farming system model for enhanced system productivity, profitability and sustainability and to undertake research, training, extension and developmental activities on various aspects of urban and periurban agriculture.

Niraputhari Visheshangal (Krishnakumar , Scientific Officer) 17.07.2020 Distribution of rice panicles for Niraputhari celebration is a unique service offered by IFSRS,Karamana,functioning under Kerala Agricultural University. Panicles harvested from an area of one metre square of rice field are sold for Rs.100. Rice panicle bunches(Ayar) regarded as a symbol of prosperity and which are used for decorating households are sold from here at prices ranging from Rs.500 to Rs.2500 depending on their size. Micro ayars which cost Rs.250 are of much demand especially during Niraputhari season. |

Krishi Arivukal VII - Vertical Farming (Dr. Jacob John, Professor and Head) 31.07.2020 Growing vegetables is gaining tremendous popularity, especially among urban dwellers. Maintaining vegetable gardens in terraces and balconies is a practical option for an urban farmer. To support such farmers, IFSRS, Karamana, functioning under the Kerala Agricultural University, has developed different structures/models for vertical farming, each with unique features. A model terrace garden, of nearly 3 cents, maintained here, produces about 350 kg of vegetables annually by way of increased production from unit area through vertical intensification using different structures. |
